The new paving for Piazza della Libertà and Via Garibaldi, in the municipality of Montelupo Fiorentino, is part of the more general project to restore the old town centre. The thinking behind this project was a desire to stress the historical heritage of this area and enhance its charm and accessibility to visitors and residents alike.
Piazza della Libertà occupies a strategic position for the plan to “knit together” the old town centre and the new conurbation that has sprung up on the other side of the river.
In order to complete the project, the square was closed to traffic and repaved in a style whose aesthetic would be fully in keeping with the rest of the architecture of the old town centre.
The design for this area took into account the existing perspective created by the surrounding buildings. The angles and geometric shape of the square are emphasised by the decorative motif set into the paving: horizontal geometric courses formed out of bush-hammered pink granite elements set against a background of mottled clinker strips, in a herringbone pattern in the main areas and set straight in the secondary sections.
The choice of such a modern material as clinker for such a historic setting was made because it harks back to the Montelupo Fiorentino ceramics tradition, so deeply rooted in that area. The use of mottled strip tiles also echoes the very similar porcelain stoneware strip tiles chosen in the past for pavements and pedestrian areas.
Eco-friendly by nature, clinker tiles by Klinker Sire are today manufactured using an ecologically “clean” process by a company that abides by a policy of utmost respect for the environment and also provides an effective response to the need for eco-friendly design, in the interests of public health and energy saving. This flooring is highly resistant to constant pedestrian and vehicle traffic and is therefore recommended for very busy areas.
