‘Creating Architecture’:

Renzo Piano at Cersaie 2009

Architect Renzo Piano will be the guest speaker at Cersaie 2009. On Thursday 1 October in the Palazzo dei Congressi in Bologna, Renzo Piano will give a keynote address entitled 'Creating Architecture'. The event will begin at 11.00 a.m. following a press conference held at 10.00 a.m.

As an architect, Renzo Piano has left his intriguing marks around the world. When - on 1 October 2008 - he was awarded the 2008 Sonning Prize (DKK 1 million), the jury’s recommendation of him stated: “While his work embraces the idiom, the materials and the latest technological competence of this era, he is clearly a European with deep roots in classical Italian tradition, architectural history and philosophy. His intellectual curiosity and problem solving techniques can be recognized in elegantly expressed structures and constructions. But his belief in the social aspects of architecture and humanitarian ideals makes him to the same extent intensely engaged in planning housing areas as well as scenery and sustainability.”

We mention the Sonning Prize’s recommendation because it perfectly summarizes all reasons why – when looking for an eminent architect for the annual lectio magistralis at Cersaie 2009 - the choice on Renzo Piano was quite immediate. This year, in fact, the trade fair appointment in Bologna will focus for sure on searching for smart, sustainable solutions to overcome the international economic crises (and its social/environmental consequences). Who better than Piano could share with us the lessons he learnt on the international scene and, in the meanwhile, embody the best of the worldwide recognized ‘Italian esprit’?

Sustainable City 2010

apr. 14-16

Urban areas produce a series of environmental problems arising from the consumption of natural resources and the consequent generation of waste and pollution. These problems contribute to the development of social and economic imbalances. All these problems, that continue to grow in our society, require the development of new solutions.
City planners, architects, environmental engineers and all academics, professionals and practitioners involved in the wide range of disciplines associated with creating a sustainable urban environment should attend the Sustainable City 2010 conference in La Coruna.
The 2010 conference follows five very successful meetings held in Rio (2000); Segovia (2002); Siena (2004); Tallinn (2006) and Skiathos (2008). The conferences attracted a substantial number of contributions from participants from different backgrounds and countries. The variety of backgrounds and experiences is one of the main reasons behind the success of the series.
This Conference aims to address the many inter-related aspects of the urban environment from transport and mobility to social exclusion and crime prevention. The meeting will build on the contributions made in previous conferences, which successfully managed to provide an international view of the problems facing modern cities and their solutions. Conference’s topics are shown here.

EcoDistretti

5th Ecodistretti Report
The Sassuolo ceramic district is at the second best among Italian industrial districts for its environmental sustainable performance. This is the situation according to the 2009 5th Rapporto Ecodistretti  - made by the association Rete Cartesio with the scientific coordination of Ambiente Italia – presented on 16 June in Rome at the offices of the Lazio Regional Government. The event took place in a workshop on the promotion of industry and territorial areas and their environmental competitiveness.
Rete Cartesio is promoted by the Regions of Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Sardinia and Tuscany in order to develop a sustainable approach to territorial area management.
The report new edition analysed 54 districts and Italian local production systems, coming from 14 regions and 18 industrial sectors. The ranking of the districts is based on environmental policies performances and clusters that put in common, in a specific geographical area, services, resources, suppliers, competences.
The territorial areas taken into account are characterised by industry of different dimensions, from large to very small companies, organised on the basis of quality and innovation able to produce a considerable added value.
The reference environmental indicators considered are infrastructures and services for environment and energy management, environmental technology diffusion, certification, labelling and product policy, controls, territorial litigation and promotion of innovative instruments for environmental management.
According to 2008 data, the Sassuolo ceramic district is just behind the Tuscan paper district of Capannori and before de food district of Langhirano (Parma). The ceramic district has 10 ISO 14001 certifications and 7 EMAS certifications, together with the wide diffusion of the European Union Ecolabel with more than 70 ceramic products and the BAT environmental technologies. Today these environmental indicators have even improved.

Nature / Architecture

aug. 02-06

Ecology of the constructed environment

... different criteria should be followed depending on whether you are in Egypt or Spain, Ponto or Rome, because it is  necessary to adapt the type of construction to the different characteristics of the place ...

(Vitruvio, De Architectura VI, I, 1. Traduzione L. Mingotto, Edizioni Studio Tesi, 1990)

The aim of the Camerino Seminar is to update, increase and improve research and practice between the university, the profession and the general public. Appealing against the temptations of spectacular architecture, the Camerino Seminar offers a critical reflection for architectural design that is sober, reasoned and conscious of the values at stake, in research into overall quality, economy and a harmonious relationship with archaeology and with nature.
Projected Themes
The minority centres. The existing project.
Green-belt and suburban farmland areas.
The architecture of preservation. Tradition and innovation

Programme: the days of study will include sessions with scheduled brief reports, communications and interdisciplinary discussions alternated with workshops within which all members can submit their work and discuss different aspects of the proposed project issues. There will be a display of the work presented by participants in the award competition with a related catalogue for internal dissemination. On the closing day, the certificates for attendance and the award CAMERINO 2009 will be presented. A monograph of the workshop will be published in Architecture and the CITY, Di Baio Editore.
