Less energy, water, raw materials. This indicates the need
for greater efficiency, elimination of waste on all levels of
the production chain and consumption with a consequential
reduction of its impact on the environment and social
equilibrium. This is what one generally refers to - at least in
the sphere of industry - with the expression, Less is more.
A Mantra of sorts, then. At present, especially in industrially
developed countries, the culmination of two centuries of
consistent accumulation of waste and destruction of nature
is plain for all to see. Last but not least, the saturation of the
markets, maybe even before the saturation of ecosystems,
has led producers and consumers alike to the realisation of
the need to impose limits.
This section of S_tiles investigates what action has been
taken until now by the ceramics industry to reduce wasteful
energy use, be it hydrolic or the exploitation of natural
resources relevant to manufacture.
At the same time it also intends to solicit designers and
consumers to reflect on the necessity of a reassessment
- Reduce -, even on purely aesthetic terms of the scope
covered by the heading Less is more.
